SPM Science 2024 (Real Paper), Paper 2 (Question 9)

Question 9:
Diagram 8.1 shows the socio-scientific issues towards the environment.
(a) Based on Diagram 8.1, state one sector in Green Technology that is related. [1 mark]

(b) Small fires always happen in the waste disposal site due to the methane gas produced from the decomposition process.
Explain how this situation can cause the global warming become more serious. [1 mark]

(c) Local authorities wish to strengthen the practice of 5R (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recovery).
Justify the action of the local authorities. [2 marks]

(d) Diagram 8.2 shows material and apparatus used to produce compost fertilisers.

You wish to produce compost fertiliser through biological process in your house.
Based on the material and apparatus in Diagram 8.2, explain the procedure to produce the compost fertiliser.
1. Collect the organic waste in the closed pail.
2.  …………
3.  …………
4.  …………
5. Put the fertiliser to ther soil.
[3 marks]

Answer:
(a) Waste and wastewater management sector
Explanation:
The diagram shows garbage collected in trash cans, while sewage waste is dumped into water sources, illustrating the problem of solid waste and wastewater management.

(b)
– Methane is a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere much more effectively than carbon dioxide (CO2).

– As the concentration of methane increases, the Earth’s temperature rises, enhancing the greenhouse effect and accelerating global warming.

Explanation:
Accumulation of methane gas contribute to global warming by releasing greenhouse gases that increase atmospheric temperature.

(c)
– The local authorities strengthen the 5R practice because it helps reduce the amount of solid waste sent to landfills, which in turn reduces environmental pollution such as foul smells, water, and air pollution.

– Furthermore, the 5R practice helps reduce waste disposal costs, minimise the use of natural resources, and promote environmental sustainability for future generations.

Explanation:
Strengthening the 5 R practice is justified as it benefits the environment, economy, and society.

(d)
Preparation of compost:
2. Add brown sugar and cultured drink into the pail.

3. Stir the mixture to ensure all ingredients are well combined.

4. Cover the pail and allow the mixture to sit for several weeks for the decomposition process.

Explanation:
To prepare compost fertiliser, collect organic waste in a covered pail with holes, add brown sugar and cultured drink, stir weekly, let it decompose for a few weeks, then spread it on soil.
