SPM Science 2025 Paper 2 (Question 13)

Question 13:
The percentage of carbon dioxide gas is increasing within the last 10 years due to various of human activities.
(a) State two processes that release carbon dioxide gas to the atmosphere. [2 marks]

(b) Diagram 12 shows a symbol of a process to dispose waste.

Describe how the process in Diagram 12 brings positive impacts towards air quality. [2 marks]

(c) Table 5 shows the data of carbon dioxide gas emission by transportation and energy sectors within 10 years.

Explain the changes of carbon dioxide gas emission by transportation and energy sectors. [4 marks]

(d) A non governmental organisation (NGO) conducted a mangrove replantation programme as an effort in carbon offset.
Describe the effects of the action towards the sustainability of the environment.
[4 marks]

Answer:
(a) – Combustion of fossil fuels
– Respiration of living organisms
– Decomposition of organic matter
– Open burning
(Any two answer)

(b) 1. Diagram 12 shows the recycling process.

2. Recycling reduces the amount of solid waste that is burned or disposed at landfill sites.

3. This reduces the release of smoke and carbon dioxide gas into the air.

(c) 1. Carbon dioxide gas emission for the transportation sector decreased from 183 million tonnes in year 2000 to 163 million tonnes in year 2010, which is a decrease of 20 million tonnes.

2. This is because the use of Green Technology such as hybrid cars, electric cars and public transportation can reduce the use of fossil fuels.

3. Carbon dioxide gas emission for the energy sector also decreased from 358 million tonnes in year 2000 to 299 million tonnes in year 2010, which is a decrease of 59 million tonnes.

4. This is because the use of renewable energy such as solar, hydro and wind energy can reduce the burning of fossil fuels.

(d) 1. Mangrove replantation increases the absorption of carbon dioxide gas from the atmosphere.

2. This can reduce the greenhouse effect and global warming.

3. Mangrove forests also reduce coastal erosion and protect coastal areas.

4. Besides that, mangrove forests become habitats for aquatic organisms and maintain ecosystem balance
