SPM Science 2023 (Real Paper), Paper 2 (Question 1 & 2)

Question 1:
A student carried out a fair experiment to study the growth pattern of green beans. Diagram 1.1 shows the growth of a green bean seedling.

(a) Based on the experiment,
(i) state what can be observed
[1 mark]

(ii) state one hypothesis
[1 mark]

(iii) state the manipulated variable
[1 mark]

(iv) state the constant variable
[1 mark]

(b) The green bean seedling is vacuum-packed after the 5th day. The graph of growth of the green bean seedling is as in Diagram 1.2.

It was found that the graph in Diagram 1.2 does not fit the growth pattern of a plant. Which part of the graph supports the finding?
[1 mark]

Answer:
(a)(i)
The height of the seedling / The length of root / Number of leaves

(a)(ii)
As the number of days/period / time increases, the height of seedling / length of root / number of leaves increases

(a)(iii)
Number of days / Time / Period

(a)(iv)
Type of seedlings / Temperature / Humidity / Presence of air / pH value

(b)
The height of seedling horizontal after the 5th day

Question 2:
Diagram 2.1 shows an experiment that is carried out by a student to study the calorific value in a food sample.

(a) Based on Diagram 2.1,
(i) state your observation on the change of the thermometer readings
[1 mark]

(ii) record the final reading of the thermometer.
………………. oC
[1 mark]

(b) The responding variable in this experiment is change in water temperature.
State one way to control that variable.
[1 mark]

(c) The student repeats the experiment by replacing the groundnut with an anchovy. Predict the final temperature of water if the initial temperature is 27 oC.
[1 mark]

(d) The student continues the experiment by using different food samples. Table 1 shows the results of the experiment.

Based on Table 1, the student made a conclusion that grilled meat has a higher calorific value. His conclusion cannot be accepted because theoretically, cheese has a higher calorific value.
State why the conclusion made by the student cannot be accepted.
[1 mark]

Answer:
(a)(i) The reading of thermometer increase

(a)(ii) 59

(b) Measure the changes of water temperature using thermometer

(c) Temperature less than 59 oC

(d) Using different masses of food samples
